As per the Legend, Sage Brigu thought of testing Trinity to offer Havissu. Brigu Visited Satya Loka and cursed Lord Brahma as Lord Brahma paid no attention towards the Sage. Sage Brigu Cursed Lord Siva that he is worshipped in Linga form only as his entry was restricted. Sage Brigu kicked Lord Vishnu on His Right chest in anger as Lord Vishnu unnoticed the Sage. Brigu said that his motive is to Right among the Trinity for his offering. Brigu realized and pleaded Goddess for the mistake. Sage requested Goddess Lakshmi that she should be born as his daughter. Mother Lakshmi happily accepted the request and advised him to perform penance. Sage did penance in Kumbakonam on the banks of Hema Pushkarini. Sage found the Goddess in a Lotus in the Pushkarini and named her as Komalavalli. It is said that Lord Vishnu descended to the earth in a chariot to marry Goddess Lakshmi, the Goddess of Wealth. As Lord Carried Bow when came for the Goddess, Hence the name Sarangapani.

As per the Legend, Lord Murugan thought of testing Poet Avvaiyar who was relaxing under the tree. Lord in the form of Shepperd sat on the tree and asked the Poet if she wants cooked or uncooked fruits. Avvaiyar didn't understand what the boy is trying to say. Avvaiyar asked for cooked fruits. The small boy shook the tree and the fruits fell to the ground. Poet has blown air to remove the dust from the fruit. The small boy then asked the poet whether it is cooked now as the fruit is hot. Avvaiyar then realized that the small boy is none other than the Lord who came to test her. Lord Murugan appeared before her at this place.
This is one of the holy abodes of Lord Murugan where he resides with his consorts, Sri Valli and Deva Sena.
Thanga Ratham (Golden Chariot) is performed daily at 7:00 pm.

Virupaksha Temple

From the inscriptions, it is known that this temple was built during 7th and 8th Century AD. This temple was built by the Queen Lokamahadevi to commemorate the success of her husband, Vikramaditya II over the Kanchi rulers, Pallavas.

Mallikarjuna Temple

This temple was built by the Queen Trilokya Mahadevi, Second wife of  Vikramaditya II during 7th and 8th Century AD. This temple was built to mark Chalukyas victory over Pallavas.

Papanatha Temple

This temple was built during 7th and 8th  century AD. Temple was built in Nagara style which later modified to Dravidian style. Scenes from Ramayana and Mahabarath were carved on the walls of the temple.

As per the Legend, Sudharma second wife Dhushma was an ardent devotee of Lord Siva. She used to prepare 101 Siva Lingas daily with the sand nearby the Lake and discharge Lingas after her Pooja. Lord Siva pleased with her devotion and blessed Dhushma with a baby boy. Sudeha, Sudharma's first wife, and Dhushma's Elder Sister got jealous and killed Dhushma's Son and threw him in the lake. Dhushma's despite her sorrow continued with her worship. Impressed Lord Siva revived her son's life and appeared before her. Dhushma pleaded Lord Siva to excuse her Sister's mistakes and requested Lord to remain here. On her request, Lord Siva self-manifested as one of the Jyotirlinga.
This temple was renovated during the reign of Goutamibal followed by Ahilya Devi Holkar during the 18th Century.

As per the folklore, Sati Devi daughter of Daksha Prajapati married Lord Siva against her father's wish. Daksha Prajapati decided to perform Yagna in a grand inviting all Devas ignoring Lord Siva. Daksha invited all his family members excluding his dearest daughter Sati Devi. Sati who got the news about this Yagna reached her paternal home. She advised her father not to go against his Son-in-law. Daksha insulted Sati Devi before the invited guests. Angered Sati Devi immolated herself in the Yogagni. Lord Siva who came to know about Sati Devi's death, raised high and ordered Kala Bhairav to destroy the Yagna and Kill Daksha. Kala Bhairav along with Kali and other Deva Ganas destroyed Yagna Place and Killed Daksha. Lord Siva performed Pralaya Thandav (Dane of Destruction) after collecting Sati Devi's corpse. In order to protect the universe, Lord Vishnu sent his Discus and destroyed Sati Devi's corpse into pieces. The broken pieces fell across Indian Subcontinent which later became holy places for worship. These places are called by Sakthi Peetas. The Yoni part of Sati Devi fallen here.

Bandipur is part of the Nilgiri biosphere reserve. This Nilgiri biosphere spread across Karnataka, TamilNadu and Kerala states. It has recorded highest tiger population in the world. It is estimated that 100 - 105 tigers estimated to live in this national park. Bandipur stretches over an area of 874 Sq. Km. It is estimated that 40,000 Spotted Deers live in this park. This national park is inhabited with Tigers, Leopards, Elephants, Spotted Deer, Sambar, Gaur, Mangoes, Jackals, Wild dogs, Sloth bear, Peacocks etc
It is estimated that 2 Lakh visitors visit Bandipur each year. This area used to be the private hunting area for Mysore Maharajas in 1930's. In 1941, this area was declared as Venugopala wildlife sanctuary. In 1973, this area was declared as the Tiger Reserve forest.

This sanctuary open for visitors on all days.
This sanctuary spreads over an area of 17.26 Sq Km. In the year 1967, this area was declared as the wildlife sanctuary to protect Black Bucks. During winter, thousands of flamingos feed on this water. As this area is home to many migratory birds, this is declared as the Ramsar site. Birds begin to arrive in Oct month after the winter monsoon. Olive Ridley sea turtles lay eggs on the beaches here.
This sanctuary is inhabited with Bonnet macaque, Black Buck, Flamingoes, Teals, Sea Gulls, Terns, Plovers, Spotted Deer, Grey Heron, Ducks, White headed Eagles and Stilts. The migrating birds come from far-off lands like Siberia, Australia, Pakistan and Sri Lanka for nesting and breeding. Point Calimere has the largest population of Blackbuck in South India.

This Sanctuary stretches over an area of 251 Sq Km. This Sanctuary is inhabited with Lion tailed Macaque, Langur Monkey, Nilgiri tahr, Sambar, Sloth bear, Gaur, Elephant, Tiger, Flying Squirrel, Panther, wild dog, Pangoline, Wild boar, Leopard, Spotted Deer, Sambar and many other carnivorous, herbivorous and reptiles.Kalakad was declared as the wildlife sanctuary in 1976 to safe guard endangered lion-tailed macaque.
The Kalakkad Mundanthurai Tiger Reserve was established in the year 1988 after combining Kalakad Wildlife Sanctuary which is 251 Sq.km and Mundanthurai Wildlife Sanctuary which is 567 Sq.km.
49 fishes, 45 amphibians, 88 reptiles, 337 bird species, 79 mammals were recorded in this sanctuary.

Swaraj Mazda Safari Visiting Hours: 7:00 am - 9:00 am and 3:00 pm - 6:00 pm.
Park remains open on all days. Private Vehicles are not allowed inside the park. Only forest department vehicles are allowed inside. Jeep safari is not available. All private vehicles have to be parked at the entrance only. Safari Vehicles moves only on the main road.

This sanctuary stretches over an area of 321 Sq.km within which the national Park spreads over an area o 103 Sq. Km. This sanctuary is inhabited by Elephants, Indian Bison, Langur Monkeys, tigers and leopards, Sloth Bear, Python, barking deer, Four- Horned Antelope, Otter, Crocodiles, Giant flying squirrel, Sambar, Hyena, Wild Dog.

Indira Gandhi Wildlife Sanctuary

This sanctuary is located at an altitude of 2400 mt above the sea level. This wildlife sanctuary stretches over an area of 108 Sq Km. Topslip is located at an altitude of 240 mt above the sea level and is located in the Annamalai hill ranges. Elephant ride is available for the tourists. Two wheelers are not allowed inside the Sanctuary for safety purpose. Four wheelers are allowed inside Sanctuary. Forest Vehicles are also available for the ride inside the Sanctuary. This area was declared as the national park in the year 1989.

Commonly seen animals

Indian Bison, Elephants, Spotted Deer, Barking Deer, Langur Monkeys, Sambar, Pangolin, Peacocks, Nilgiris Tahr, are commonly sighted in the sanctuary. Lion-tailed macaque, Bonnet macaque, Nilgiris langur, Malabar giant squirrel and Grizzled giant squirrel can be seen here as well.
Advisable to visit Sanctuary in the morning hours so that there is a possibility of animals deer, bisons, hornbills, elephants sightseeing. Tigers are spotted rarely in this sanctuary.

Trekking Inside Forest

Trekking is allowed only for 4 hours with a Tour guide. It cost Rs.70 per person for trekking.

The three Goddess Maha Lakshmi, Parvathi and Saraswathi collectively created a Sakthi and directed her to protect Dharma on this Earth. The Sakthi took birth as a girl child for Ratnakar and his wife, who were ardent devotees of the Goddesses and named the girl as Vaishnavi. As instructed by Rama, Vaishnavi built an Ashram and started meditating until she joins with Lord Vishnu in Kaliyug. MahaYogi Guru Goraksh Nath who came to know about Goddess Vaishnavi existence on the Earth visited the Ashram with his disciples and Bhairon Nath seeking blessings.
Bhairon Nath attracted to the beauty of Vaishnavi, who is carrying bow and arrows and surrounded by apes and lion. Bhairon Nath chased Vaishnavi to marry her. Vaishnavi escaped from him and reached Banganga, Charan Paduka, Adhkwari and finally reached the holy cave. Angered Goddess beheaded Bhairon, whose head fell distant apart. Bhairon realised the reason for his birth and pleaded for the guilty. Pleased Goddess blessed him with a boon that Yatra will be fulfilled after having Darshan of Bhairon. Goddess transformed herself as a rock with 3 hands.

As per the Legend,  At Pukar, the capital of the Chola empire, there are two merchants. Kannaki daughter of one of the Merchant got married to Kovalan son of another merchant. Kovalan attracted to a dancer by name Madhavi. Kovalan rejoined his wife after becoming penniless. Kannaki happily accepted her husband and offered him one of her golden anklets for sale. They moved to Madura, the Pandya to start a new life.
Kovalan entered Goldsmith Street attached to the Royal household. King ordered Staff to executed Kovalan on the false theft case. Kovalan was executed and his body laid in a Madura Street. Angered Kannaki reached the King's court and showed them the second anklet. She accused The King him of Killing her innocent husband.
She broke open her other anklet and lot of precious stones spilled out sparkling. Kannaki went out to the streets, tore off her left breast in fury and cursed the city of Madura which started burning immediately.

Birds reach Kolleru during Oct month and Leave nests in the Apr month. Around 200 bird species make Kolleru as their Home during this time. Majorly Birds from Australia, Siberia, Egypt and Philippines reaches Kolleru for reproduction.
Kolleru Lake Birds: Spot-billed pelicans, Grey Pelicans, Open Bill Storks, Painted Storks, Glossary Ibises, White Ibises, Teals, Pintails, Shovellers, Red-Crested Pochards, Black-winged Stilts, Avocets, Common Redshanks, Winged Stilts, Avocets, Common Redshanks, Pigeons, Gadwalls and Cormorants can be seen here.

Lake Spreads over an area of 673 Sq. kilometers. During the rainy season, the heavy flow from Budameru and Tammileru enters Kolleru Lake. This area was declared as a Wildlife Sanctuary in Nov 1999.
This is the second largest freshwater lakes in India. Lake is located between the deltas of River Godavari and Krishna.

As per the Legend, Sati daughter of Daksha Prajapati married Lord Siva against his wish. Daksha Prajapati thought of taking revenge for which he decided to perform Yajna. He had invited all Devas excluding Lord Siva. Sati who came to know about Yajna reached her paternal home to advise his father. Daksha insulted her daughter Sati before the guests. Angered Sati Self immolated her in Yogagni. Angered Lord Siva ordered Veerbhadra and Kali to destroy Yajna. Siva Ganas along with Veerbhadra and Kali destroyed the Yajna and Killed Daksha. Lord danced the dance of destruction after collecting Sati's corpse. To stop the universal destruction, Lord Vishnu sent his Chakra and destroyed Sati's body. Konark Sun Temple History
The temple was built during the reign of Raja Narasimhadeva in 13th Century AD. Temple architecture reflects Kalinga construction style.
As per the Legend, Sambudu Manasaputra of Lord Krishna got relieved from Leprosy on taking bath at Chandrabhaga. He also recovered the Sun God Idol from the Chandrabhaga Sarovar. Who installed the Idol of Konark and built the temple. Temple was built during 1257 - 1260 AD.
It is stated in Purushottama Mahatya that Lord Vishnu after killing the Demon Gayasura, left his Conch in Puri, Disc in Bhubaneswar, Mace in Jajpur and Lotus in Konark.

The main temple was built 229 ft above the ground. The Portuguese Navy staff using their authorities removed the Vimana Sikara as they believed that magnetic force from the Vimana Sikara was disrupting the Ships movement. As soon as the Vimana Sikara was removed the Gopuras, pillars balanced on the collapsed to the ground.

From the inscriptions, it is known that this temple was built during the reign of Yayati Kesari in 7th century AD. This temple was later renovated by Kalinga Bhupati during 13th Century AD.
As per the Legend, Siva once said that Bhubaneshwar (Ekamra Tirtha) stands next to Varanasi. Goddess Parvati in the form of a cowherd started grazing the cattle near this Tirtha. Two demons Kriti and  Vasa wanted to marry Parvati. She asked them to carry on their shoulders. She then crushed them to the ground with her power. Lord Siva created Bindu Sagar Saras to fulfil the thirst of Goddess Parvati. He then self-manifested here as Lingaraja. Bindu Sagar Saras Pushkarini was built in the 9th Century. It is believed that taking a holy dip in this Pushkarini will get the similar benefits of Ganga in Varanasi. Water from this Pushkarini will be used for Abhishek.
This is Padal Peeda Kshetra, where offerings will be made for the ancestors. The temple Gopura is of 180 ft height.

This temple is one among the 12 Jyotirlingas across the Indian subcontinent and is 9th among them. As per the legend, the holy city was built at the merging point of Rivers Varuni and Asi with the River Ganga, hence the name Varanasi. It is believed that Lord Siva and Goddess Parvati stayed here for some time.
This temple is of 3000 years old. The present form of the temple was built by the ardent devotee Maharani Ahilya Bai Holkar of Indore in 1777. In the year 1839, Maharaja Ranjeet Singh donated gold to cover the two Gopuras of the temple. Ghats were built during the 18th century.
Ganga Aarti will be performed daily similar to Haridwar. It is said that Adi Sankaracharya, Tulasidas, Ramakrishna Paramahamsa, Swamy Vivekananda, Guru Nanak visited this holy shrine.

As per the Legend, Ravana thought of bringing Lor Siva to Lanka for permanent for which he performed strict penance. Impressed Lord Siva, handed Atma Linga as he himself can't come and stay at Lanka. Lord Siva instructed Ravana, not to keep Atma Linga on the Earth. Devas prayed Lord Vishnu to stop Ravana reaching Lanka with the Linga. As the Sun was setting, Ravana found a Brahman Cowherd (Lord Vishnu disguised himself) and hand over the Linga and asked him not to keep on the Earth. After three repeat calls, Vishnu kept the Linga on the Earth. Ravana tried hard to remove the Earth. All his efforts went vain and returned to Lanka with empty hands. This is one the 12 Jyotirlingas across India. It is believed that Lord Rama worshipped Lord Siva during Tretayuga.

This area was declared as the National Park in the year 1978. This park stretches over 777 Sq. Km. This Park is one of the major Tiger Reserves in India. It is estimated that there are 40 tigers currently living in this park.
Best Time to visit: Feb - May months. During Summer, wild animals gather near the lake in the morning and evening hours.

Elephants, Bisons, Deer, Sambar, Wild Boars, Wild Dogs are commonly noticed around the lake. Great Pied Hornbill, Osprey, Parakeets, Ospreys, Racket-tailed Drongos can be seen here.
This lake which got formed due to Dam construction serves wild animals. Boating is available in this Lake right from 7:30 am. It is 1 hour 30 mins trip across the lake.

It is believed that Guru Raghavendra did penance here for Panchamukhi Anjaneya for 12 years. Impressed Lord Anjaneya appeared before Raghavendra Swamy with Panchamukha namely Varaha, Garuda, Narasimha, Hayagreeva and Anjaneya. It is after Lord Anjaneya Darshan that Sri Raghavendra entered Jeeva Samadhi.
It is said that Kolhapur Mahalakshmi, Lord Venkateswara, Lord Vishnu in Kurmavathar offered darshan to Sri Guru Raghavendra.
As per the Legend, during Tretayuga, Anjaneya visited this place while rescuing Rama and Lakshmana from Mahiravana. It is believed that Anjaneya entered the cave near Erukalamba temple to reach Mahiravana. There is a foot impression of Lord Hanuman outside the temple.
Temple will be crowded on special days such as Hanuman Jayanthi, Tuesdays, Sundays, No moon day and Pournami day. The huge rock structures near to the temple were used by Lord Anjaneya as the Bed and Pillow during his stay.

Omkareshwar Temple History
Temple is dedicated to Lord Siva and is one of the 12 Jyotirlingas across India. Temple is located on the Banks of the River Narmada. It is believed that the devotee will be relieved from rebirth cycle on taking a holy dip in Koti Tirtha and having Lord Omkareshwar Darshan. The sanctity of this Kshetra was mentioned in Siva Purana and Skanda Purana. It is believed that Lord Siva blessed Goddess Narmada to stay at his feet always. It is said that Sage Narada praised the holiness of the hill Meru before the Devas. On hearing this the Hill Vindhyachal did penance of Lord Siva and requested the Lord to self-manifest here as Jyotirlinga.
From the inscriptions, it is known that this temple is of 2000 years old and was renovated by the ardent devotee King Mandhata. It is believed that Lord Siva blessed Raja Mandhata at this place.
Gomukh Ghat is located between Vishnu Puri and Brahma Puri and the rivulet joins River Narmada, it is called by Kapila Sangamam.

Mattupetty

Mattupetty Dam is 13 km from Munnar and is at an altitude of 1700 m above the sea level. Mattupetty Dam is a storage concrete gravity Dam built in the mountains, to conserve water for hydroelectricity. Speed boating is available in Kundala lake at Mattupetty Dam. The reservoir is known to be one of the visiting grounds of elephants in the region.

Pothamedu

Pothamedu View Point is 6 km from Munnar town. Tea, coffee and cardamom plantations view is available from here. Pothamedu View Point provides a panoramic view of Munnar town, adjoining valleys and Muthirapuzha River.

Devikulam

The Devikulam Lake is located at an altitude of 1000 mt above the sea level and was called by Sita Devi Lake. This place is 13 km from Munnar town.  As per the Legend, Goddess Sita took bath in this lake during their stay.

Pallivasal

Sethuparvati Arch Dam created the Kundala Lake as part of the Pallivasal Hydro Electric Project in 1946.

Attukal

This place is 9 km from Munnar Town and falls on the way to Pallivasal. Water falls from mountain cliffs attracts the tourists. Best time to visit: Jun - Sep ie. right after the monsoon.

Nyayamakad Waterfalls

Nyayamakad Waterfalls is another interesting tourist spot which is 10 km from Munnar Town. It falls on the way to Rajamala Nyayamakad from Munnar town. Water flow the hill from a height of 1600 mt.
