Omkareshwar Temple History
Temple is dedicated to Lord Siva and is one of the 12 Jyotirlingas across India. Temple is located on the Banks of the River Narmada. It is believed that the devotee will be relieved from rebirth cycle on taking a holy dip in Koti Tirtha and having Lord Omkareshwar Darshan. The sanctity of this Kshetra was mentioned in Siva Purana and Skanda Purana. It is believed that Lord Siva blessed Goddess Narmada to stay at his feet always. It is said that Sage Narada praised the holiness of the hill Meru before the Devas. On hearing this the Hill Vindhyachal did penance of Lord Siva and requested the Lord to self-manifest here as Jyotirlinga.
From the inscriptions, it is known that this temple is of 2000 years old and was renovated by the ardent devotee King Mandhata. It is believed that Lord Siva blessed Raja Mandhata at this place.
Gomukh Ghat is located between Vishnu Puri and Brahma Puri and the rivulet joins River Narmada, it is called by Kapila Sangamam.
