Bandipur is part of the Nilgiri biosphere reserve. This Nilgiri biosphere spread across Karnataka, TamilNadu and Kerala states. It has recorded highest tiger population in the world. It is estimated that 100 - 105 tigers estimated to live in this national park. Bandipur stretches over an area of 874 Sq. Km. It is estimated that 40,000 Spotted Deers live in this park. This national park is inhabited with Tigers, Leopards, Elephants, Spotted Deer, Sambar, Gaur, Mangoes, Jackals, Wild dogs, Sloth bear, Peacocks etc
It is estimated that 2 Lakh visitors visit Bandipur each year. This area used to be the private hunting area for Mysore Maharajas in 1930's. In 1941, this area was declared as Venugopala wildlife sanctuary. In 1973, this area was declared as the Tiger Reserve forest.
