As per Legends, Sage Dwaraka did penance here on Sesachala Hills for the Lord Vishnu. Impressed with the penance, Lord self-manifested here in an anthill facing south. Sage unearthed the upper part of the Idol and remaining half still in the anthill because which Lord's holy feet is not visible outside. Later in the 11th Century AD, Saint Ramanujacharya installed one more idol following Vaikhanasa Agama Sastra on devotees request.
Abhishekam will not be performed to the deity here. Annual Kalyanotsavam will be performed in the months of Vaikasa and Aswayuja to represent two deities.
The present form the temple was built by Mylavaram Zamindars. Gopura, Mantap, Vimana and outer walls were built by Dharma Apparao during 1762 - 1827 AD. Rani Chinnamma Rao gifted jewels to the deity during 1877 - 1902 AD.
