Lord Sri Krishna before leaving to heaven, had gifted his own Idol to the foremost disciple Uddhava and ordered him to install the Idol in consultation with Guru, for the benefit of all beings. On Uddhava's request, Guru along with Vayu (God of Wind) went on a search for the suitable place and was able to identify beautiful lake with full of lotuses where Lord Siva and Goddess Parvathi were residing. On seeing them with the Idol, Lord Siva told them to install the Idol here, while Lord Siva and Goddess were moved to nearby Mammiyur.
Later Divine architect Viswakarma built the temple for the Idol here, as this Idol was installed by Guru and Vayu, this place was popular with their names as Guruvayur. Every year on the day of Vishnu (Malayalam New Year) sunrays touches the holy feet of the Lord.
Another version of the legend, It is Parasurama, an incarnation of Lord Vishnu who commanded Guru and Vayu to install the Idol here.
